Megadownloader is down – Mega.NZ has fixed the flaw – What Now?

Mega.Nz has always been a fantastic place for the retro community to share files, downloads, and much more due to the large nature of the packages, indeed, us here at Arcade Punks receive almost 95% of our submitted links via Mega.Nz, the site does tend to cap downloads and bandwidth after downloading so much (usually 5gb) but we have always overcome this by such programs and apps as MegaDownloader and Jdownloader (as well as¬†megatools and mipony!) – that is, until now , as it appears Mega.Nz have taken it upon themselves to ‘IP restrict’ using our IP address as an absolute end to end protection – this causing no end of problems to users with shared IP WAN IP addresses split between many users (such as student dorms!).

A recent post on reddit confirms the worst :-

Mega patched the bypass for bandwidth limit which megadownloader and many other downloaders were using so we are no longer to able to download large files (5gb+) without changing IP address.

Programs confirmed not working: Megadownloader, megatools, jdownloader, mipony.

Currently only ways to download files that exceed 5GB in size are:

1.Using VPN and megadownloader. Once you get the error stop your downloads, exit megadownloader, turn on VPN and switch to a different location, open megadownloader again and resume. Downloads should continue fine. download speed I’m getting with free VPN(it is throttled by a lot, but at least it works)

2.Using VPN and megasync. Import files to your account and start downloading with megasync. When the 5gb limit is met use your VPN to switch location. Download should resume in a couple of seconds. (credit: /u/WrenchMonkey319)

3.If you have a dynamic IP, you can reset your router or use Reset-TCPIP.exe (credit: /u/Vitus1992)

Of course the other option that is not mentioned is to purchase a Mega.NZ account and think nothing else of it but ultimately it appears the only real way is to change your IP Address, if you are dynamic thats ok, if you are static, you may be in a bit of trouble unless you use proxies or vpns (if you use VPN you should ensure you have a good hand of IPs you can switch between!) – even some dynamic ISPs hold your IP for up to an hour after switching your router off, so you can keep it off an hour and lo-and-behold switch it on and STILL have the same IP (an easy fix to this would be tell the router to connect a different way then what is set up and let it lock the IP out the domain, then try and and connect properly after 5 mins of alternative hammering – google your isp and how to change IP for more information.

At this moment in time, Arcade Punks have sent a brief email round to all uploaders and link submitters and ask that they find other hosts to upload too, although from what we see the pickings are slim and that Mega.Nz was and is the best place for multi file upload Рthe general feedback at the moment is that all we can do from our point of view is assist member requests for our members and get them on our private servers (please note members are different from registered users Рsee here for more details) so that they can have direct downloads/private torrents and see what other options are open for file hosts of such big sizes.
