BoredGameDad is back once again, this time with something very different and certainly unique to him, an absolutely SUPER CLEAN Batocera FULLY LOADED Raspberry Pi 4 gaming build, and its fierce competition for being one of the best 256gb Pi4 images we have seen to date.
See what the big guy has to say here :-
The Pi 4 has been out for a minute now, and while we’re still waiting on things like updated Vulkan drivers, I felt like the time was right to jump in with a new SUPER CLEAN BoredGameDad image!
This 256GB image is running Batocera. I made the change from RetroPie because Batocera is a great fit for my build mentality. I want things to work for the end user with no muss and no fuss, and that’s exactly what Batocera is built for! Plus, you can do all of your tweaks and changes (including changing shaders and overlays) right within EmulationStation. In addition, since Batocera is itself the operating system you great crazy fast boot times and some great themes unavailable on any other platform, like the CKAU Book theme running on my image.
This theme has a TON of customization options in the menu, and I encourage everyone to take a look. It’s essentially multiple themes in one! If you have any EmulationStation freezing issues, raising your vRAM to 328mb should resolve your issue.
I’ve done all of the tricky stuff for you guys with this one, like forcing 1080p on EmulationStation so you don’t get screen blanking on non-4k TVs, and setting up the Argon One case in the settings. (The power button is finicky, so I recommend shutting down within Batocera and then using the power button on the case to cut power after shutdown.) If you have a different case with a built in power button, you can find info on setting it up here: https://wiki.batocera.org/add_powerdevices_rpi_only
This is by no means meant to be the ultimate does-it-all build. This is intended to be a stable base for those looking for it, that you can add to or subtract from to your heart’s content. That being said, it’s got a pretty comprehensive list of console games as well as MAME, NEO GEO, DAPHNE, and ScummVM! I also left about 20GB unused so if you want to expand the Dreamcast collection, or add OpenBOR or NAOMI you have some room for that.
This was built on a Microcenter 256GB micro SD. It may require using GParted in Linux to trim if it doesn’t fit on your card. This can be done in a Virtual Machine or via Linux on USB.
