MrBurns has stopped pushing Smythers around, released this cracking little 800-in-one Pi flavoured vertical image (and the hounds!), crammed with classic vertical Roms, EmulationStation (Landscape) and AttractMode (Vertical), this is a tidy little image sure to please.
This is a straightforward, easy to use Attract Mode image that contains over 800 vertical arcade games (it is arcade only). I have gone for a very clean look as I use this on my own arcade cabinet and didnt want to see any boot text, loading messages, on screen GUI messages etc. and have no need to ever access the terminal on the machine itself.
I have tested all games at minimum to the point of inserting a coin to ensure they work and have included all the necessary config files to ensure each game is rotated vertical. This is a Pi 3B+ compatible image and the kernal and software are fully up-to-date as of 7th November 2018 using RetroPie V4.4 and Attract Mode was built from source with hardware video encoding included (but not enabled in Attract Mode). By default I have disabled all ‘Adult’ and ‘Clone’ games, but have included separate Attract Mode romlists where you can re-enable this content as desired. I have also added a small selection of vertical oriented layouts within Attract Mode with ‘Vertical Robospin’ applied as default. – MRBURNS
+ First Boot and Emulation Station Setup +
On first boot the image will boot into Emulation Station where you will be prompted to set up your controller as normal. Note if you have a bluetooth controller you may need to exit out by pressing ‘F4’ and setup the bluetooth connection via the normal Retropie Setup Script – link
Once you have setup your controller you will be taken into the normal Emulation Station frontend and by now you will notice that the screen is not in vertical mode. This is because the config.txt file is NOT set to rotate the display due to it causing a performance hits and instead the rotation is handled in Attract Mode and via configuration of the emulators.
Go into ‘Retropie’ system and choose ‘Raspi-Config’ if you need to configure anything on your Pi (such as expanding the filesysem).
When you have finished setting up your Pi and you are ready to enter Attract Mode then go back into the ‘Retropie’ system and select either ‘Attract Mode’ or ‘Attract Mode – Quiet’ to enable auto-booting into Attract Mode. The quiet mode will remove all terminal text and will also remove the cursor itself, leaving all text fully hidden. Please note that once this is enabled you will have
difficulty doing anything in the terminal (due to text being invisible!), so be sure todo any terminal work *before* enabling quiet mode. That being said SSH is enabled by default and will work just fine.
+ Attract Mode Setup +
On first boot into Attract Mode you will launch straight into the list of arcade games. You will need to set up your joystick for use in Attract Mode frontend so press ‘TAB’ on your keyboard or ‘Joy Button 1 & Joy Up’ together to enter the Attract Mode config menu. Further instructions for Attract Mode can be found here.
+ Controls +
The emulators I have set up are MAME2003 (libretro), FBA (libretro) and AdvMAME (non-libretro) and in-game controls should have automatically set up for the libretro emulators when you configured your controller in Emulation Station, but AdvMAME likely did not so if you need to alter them then simply launch a game and press ‘TAB’ to bring up the normal MAME menu where you can alter controls accordingly. If you need to alter the controls for the FBA core games then you can do that via the normal in-game GUI – link
+ Display +
Display is rotated 90 degrees in Attract Mode and in the emulators and have set the aspect ratio to 16:9 by default. The aspect ratio can be changed in the RetroPie Setup Script – link
+ Final Notes +
Splash video to this image is around 17 seconds long, which is considerably longer than the time it takes to boot Attract Mode so added in a ‘sleep 12’ command into the ‘autostart.sh’ file to make it delay the Attract Mode startup by 12 seconds to allow the video to play to the end. If you wish to change the splash video then you will probably want to adjust the sleep
time by using the following command:
sudo nano /opt/retropie/configs/all/autostart.sh
Now change the line that reads ‘sleep 12’ to anything you desire, i.e. ‘sleep 6’, or remove the ‘sleep’ function altogether by deleting that line, but be careful not to delete anything else in here as these commands tell your Pi what software to load on boot!
Thank You for downloading my image, I hope you enjoy it! Please note I make no claim to having developed any of this software or themes etc. myself, all credit belongs to the authors and developers, all I have done is built an image using their great work. – MRBURNS
