I recently (last week) got the urge to build a cabinet after visiting a local game store and seeing they had a few cabs in back for sale.
After talking to the guy at the counter, he suggested a MAME cabinet, let me say I'm as green as they get in this stuff, a rookie, wet behind the ears, and prone to committing to projects before I fully know what's involved
I went and ordered the raspberry pie 3B from amazon, along with a button/joy kit, and while I waited the 4-5 days for those to arrive, I scoured the internet for pictures of homemade cabinets,
I landed on one incredible build that unfortunately I don't remember "where" I saw it other than Google fu, but it was a Flynns arcade Home build.
insert trip to local hardware store this weekend to get wood, err purchase it.
And the build began….
(Im typing this from my phone, and when I get back to the office I'll attach photos, and update the thread)

If you're using a Pie the sky's the limit.
Can build them into anything from Gameboy's to the Full Size Cabinets.
Personally I would look for something that suites your budget and also living area.
I personally think the pedestal design works the best.

Hook them up to your TV or any screen and the PIE can run Kodi and other apps to add to the attraction. Plus you can move them.

alright obligatory photos from the weekend,
i searched google images for a slim build and printed off the first set of legible plans i could find, Â hit lowes on the way home to wrestle a cpl sheets of mdf into the truck, and jumped head first, and blindfolded into this build
the google fu'd plans
" alt="" width="480" height="640" />
drawing out the template
" alt="" width="480" height="640" />
first side panel cut,Â
" alt="" width="480" height="640" />
second
" alt="" width="480" height="640" />
starting to box it in
" alt="" width="480" height="640" />
" alt="" width="480" height="640" />
adding the tv
" alt="" width="480" height="640" />
mocking up cp box
" alt="" width="480" height="640" />
bulding up cp box
" alt="" width="480" height="640" />
and after i placed the top plate on the box, i wasnt happy with a few mitered joints, and also the angles where i cut the corners
so it is all coming off this evening or the next, and being redone. more photos to come, if this latest attempt to share them worked. if it doesnt… just imagine a homer simpson bird house… that plays arcade games… LOL
i drew out the template on the wood, then cut, and used it as a guide to cut the other side.
this is where the plans stopped as i purchased a different sized tc that the original, so i took measurements, decided on how much "lip" i wanted surrounding the screen, and got back at it.
i made some pretty good progress, getting everything boxed in, and starting on the CP box, … right up until i laid the box in, and realized i didnt care for it… so im off to lowes again this evening hopefully, for another sheets of MDF to redo the CP box.

Ripped off the old first CP last night when i got home, and with some help of a buddy rebuilt it with some better angles, and most importantly, tighter miters.
he brought his kids over too, which was a perfect opportunity for for free labor in painting the cab. lol
no photos, as i was more or less working in the dark last night, so when i get home today ill try and snap a few to update the thread.
i also bought a 30$ set of computer speakers/subwoofer with remote volume and power, and began to gut the speakers from the boxes, to mount in the cabinet, ( they are MUCH LOUDER and fuller sounding in the cabinet)
Logitech 980-000382 Z313 Â is the speaker kit i purchased,
these are both small and cheap, but when i put them over the holes in the cab, and tested it off my cell phone, it was loud enough to be way overkill for an arcade,
the remote has a wheel style volume adjustment in it, and im going to pull it apart, and either solder in a potentiometer knob, to mount in the cab so just the knob is visible, or hopefully ill luck out and i can just modify a knob to go on the exiting pot,

photo dump from the above. but i must admit, i mucked up drilling the admin button holes, ( i drilled them for the size of the player start buttons, and the holes are too close together to enlarge) so i will be once again cutting a new top plate this evening…
free  paint labor lol ( will need some re coats)Â
" alt="" width="480" height="640" />
speaker wire up
" alt="" width="480" height="640" />
wired up the buttons just to see my progress beofre i have to undo it and re cut top plate.Â

i had some goodies arrive in the mail last night for the cab,
the speaker grills,
an official canakit power supply ( i was testing off a 2.4a battery pack)
a powered usb hub to run an external HDD
and most importantly, the water blocks, micro pump and cupholders, to test my "ever cold  drink holder design"
as usual ill keep updating with progress as i make it,

I purchased a 20 button kit with 8 way joysticks, and zero delay usb board from amazon, and watched madlittle pixels youtube series on building an arcade on youtube, he has a video on what slots to plug each one of the buttons/joystick connectors into, after that just plug into pie via supplied USB cables.

well,… the stainless steel cup holders are not going to cut it, thermal conductivity is garbage on them,.. i probably should've looked up the TCs of different metals BEFORE buying them, ha!
i have a creative idea of re purposing a copper end cap from large copper piping to replace the steel ones, with copper being nearly 13 times more conductive of heat transfer, they "ought" to work great! down side… $$$
my other option is scouring the interwebz for some 2 5/8 ID aluminum pipe, and using an aluminum plate on the bottom.

long story short, im in a standstill, im not quite smart enough to figure out the issue im having with the hyperspin build i posted in MLPs section about, so i started a new download that ought to be finished, i expect, sometime tomorrow.
as for the cup holders, i ordered in copper ones, and they were just a scoach too small. i attempted to "stretch" them with some aluminium i milled but it wrinkled, so im more or less back to the drawing board on that, i also m waiting on a response from rockstar print in the UK on some side art via email,
so, all in all, alot of "hurry up and wait"
it is currently operational with a smaller no attract mode 32 gig image, and gets usage, but this project has gone on long enough, and id like to go ahead and button it up, haha.
i havent given up n the cup holders, just have to begin thinking outside of the box with it, ( im thinking possibly sending the to an exhaust shop and see if they can use a tubing "stretcher" on them.. we'll see .
i did purchase a sheet of acrylic, … or plexi?.. im not sure its actual composition. and a marvel poster from wal-mart i intent on sandwiching in between 2 pcs of the clear plastic like material for the marquee, that "ought" to be done tonight.

art work has been ordered and paid for, now the waiting game, i also went ahead and ordered some aluminum extruded pipe to tinker around with the can chillers some more, but im about ready to just call it and use standard cup holders and tell people if they dont want a warm drink, to drink it faster!
i ordered the above prints for the cab.

i havent "given up" but more just " given in" for the time being, i have some more materials ordered to give it another go, but it'll be next month until they arrive :-/ ( hurry up and wait).
thanks for the encouragement though ninja!
on the upside i had a buddy over this past weekend to play it, and for the most part its up to par, we ran into a cpl issues with a few games, where the game didnt operate correctly or we just gave up, because we couldnt figure out "how" to play the game LOL. and moved onto another title,
all in all though im happy with it thus far.
i did order a 3d printer the other day, "just because" Â so maybe one of my first projects will be some trim rings for the cup holders,
ps those daphne games… are they keyboard only??

thanks ninja,
still some stuff to go on it, i caved in and order an ultimark trackball kit, and while i was on his site i picked up one the the aimtrack gun boards to drop into a ps1 guncon more to come on that as i get the bits in, and teach myself how to install/work them,
in the mean time, …
the purple led back lighting isnt as centrally focus'd as the photo makes it look from the "bloom" but hopefully youll get the idea.
