I faced a similar problemn after mu first proper arcade coin ops build. Using 6 buttons & Sanwa joystick, plus 1 P & 2P button (wired to start & select). Connected it all to Xinmo usb adapter for PC use. Because of my chioce of buittons I had 2 spare connections left over (shoulder buttons I think). The only way to exit was to use keyboard and esc key. Made decision to add 2 more buttons and since then pressing one or both of those buttons together seems to act as escape key. Not sure if this is applicable or helpfuyl for you but definately glad I went that route. Can also try lauching the emulator exe program directly from its folder and configuring controls from there.

Thanks for the reply scorryuk.
I have an original 1980s arcade machine that I have retrofitted with PC and CoinOps. Its only a 3 button per side so the games that I play are kind of limited. The upside is that I have extra encoder ports for extra keys. Its actually not the lack of ports on the encoder that is the problem but how to tell one of the buttons to be the escape key. I really just cant figure it out where the command is inside any CoinOps menu.
So to sum it up:
1. I have enough encoder ports for an escape button
2. I have a button on the machine wired up ready as an escape button
3. I just cant find where in any CoinOps menu where I can tell the program that this button is now the escape key.
Cheers

I’ve had a go at configuring the controls.conf file and had no success. I assigned key 9 as an additional ESC key and wired the button up to it. It works in the front end but once in the game it doesnt work at all. I have tried all sorts of key combos but all have the same problem. They work in the scroll screen but within the game they dont work at all. I have the same problem assigning a pause key.
What I really need it a way to assign ESC with in the game. Nothing seems to be working. I dont want to have a keyboard always sitting on my arcade machine to exit every single game. It’s quite frustrating.

6Whoo Hoo I figured it out. In General Controls Menu/User Interface/ I scrolled through every option (as I had done a dozen times) looking for an escape option. Under UI Cancel I saw that among a bunch of key designations there was ESC included. I reassigned my button, Q and ESC to this and it all works as it should.rnI have a feeling that I’ll need to configure every game but at least I can move forward from my problem. I found out what I was doing wrong with the pause button designation also.rnThanks so much for your help.
