Hey folks,

I’m an old fella so please be patient. I’m super techy and a lot of this stuff goes over my head.

Looking to build a portable unit for myself (glory days) and the kiddos (so they can share in said glory days).

End result: portable emulator, with a bazillion games, that can be moved to different rooms / travel with us.

Emu box: I’m up in Canada so looking at the canakit site. They have full kits that include, what appears to be, everything one would need to set up the emulator box.

Emu box questions: one of these two kids is the kit I’m looking at. If I’m reading correctly, the only differences are the size of the SD card, 1 vs 2 hdmi cables, and one has a fan vs self cooling case.

Size of SD card doesn’t matter if I’m going to use an external HD, correct?
If that’s the case, any recommendation between fan vs self cooling model? I honestly have no idea

Games: if I understand this all correctly, I would need an additional SD card (other than the one that comes with the kit) OR an SSD drive to put the games on. If so, that’s great cause I have a spare 1tb and 2tb SSD drive, sitting around. They are both Sandisk.

Games Question: is there much of an advantage to going to an M2 drive? I know the speeds are much quicker than regular SSD but I don’t suspect its ALL that important, given that these games are pretty small, so the data being transferred is pretty small. But, I’m not certain of this.

Controllers: ideally, I would like to use a PS4 controller, since we have a PS4 and three controllers already. This requires Bluetooth. I don’t see Bluetooth as a native option on any of these kits. This implies the need for a Bluetooth dongle, yes? If not, I need some help here cause I don’t understand. If so, any recommendations on a dongle that pairs well/plays nice in the sandbox with Pi4?

I think that’s it for now. I think I’m on the right track but just need some nudging into the right directions so I make the right decisions.

Thanks folks. I really appreciate it.

forget size of sd card – you’ll end up buying your own storage medium (ssd or sd)

You’ll replace the sd card or overwrite it

wont make any difference with retrogaming

pi4 has bluetooth
