Concept… To build a cabinet with 6 buttons, 1 joystick and 1 gun (aimtrak) per player – with 2 players. Of course 1p/2p/start/select/coin buttons too!

To then configure the complete downloaded Hyperspin PiPiggies to suit a home build arcade cabinet with the above specs – to only include games and systems that are suitable for that controller layout, without having to add controllers – for example any Sega Master System game would be perfect, as they would not require more than 6 buttons or 1 controller, however, some PLAYSTATION may not be suitable due to the PSX Controllers having 6 (or 8) buttons not including start/select and so on with newer systems such as PS2, PS3, even Dreamcast and N64!!

So ONLY including games (if any) from "incompatible" systems if the game is 6 button arcade cabinet friendly or light-gun (and button!) friendly…

Will also be looking at setting up a 2nd monitor as a marquee and adding "marquee packs" for those who are doing the same.. Wanting to go through EVERY SET of systems and ROMs once the complete pipiggies packs have been shared – even the PS2 stuff, purely because when the PiPiggies shares are completed, everyone in theory has the same thing to work from…..

Some of my own "personal preferences" would include (and not have to be copied by others!) – not having huge amounts of 8bit games loaded, for example I only played around 10 games on the Spectrum and about 8 on the Amstrad CPC, around 4 on the C64 – I would want to shrink the 8bit collections down to "top 30" – which I would probably do on MOST of the systems (maybe TOP 50 on the bigger ones) . Im hoping to get the entire build down to 1tb to fit on a 1tb SSD ready for the cabinet.

I would also be looking to add a few more modern/"me-playable" PC games, for example I LOVE "Plants vs Zombies" not sure if the versions included are Arcade Friendly -   Again nothing to crazy which requires more buttons than available but certainly some high scaled MODERN (CRT Friendly) graphic beauties to show off the cabinet when we have guests at Arcade Punks HQ , or ultimately, Home, where the machine will end up !

Where am I with the build now?

OK, So I have the cabinet, I have an original 4.3 CRT fitted already and I have a SWEET LCD Marquee monitor that fits the top PERFECTLY, I dont yet have the joystick controllers, joysticks or buttons, so will be purchasing them and will of course share wiring diagrams, and links of where purchased from , I also have to make the entire control panel where the buttons sit, as there currently isnt really one – well there is , but its full of – different- holes , I also have to think finishing graphics…. I also have a very decent audio sound system and a couple of Aimtrak guns (I need to fit the sensor too!) – of course a PC, without spending a fortune on something, Im hoping to have an old office PC with a beefed up card (nothing too expensive!) – pix and stuff to follow in due course… You could of course, just buy a pre-made kit to build up and add a LCD Monitor and go all the way , Im sticking with the CRT as it was in this beauty of a cab I have and ITS A BEAST!!

I'd love to hear your thoughts, feedback, suggestions and general input, I have spoke to the other MODs and this entire project will more-than-likely end up with its own sub-forum (which makes sense!) – whereby we can break down each system, and the complete build, as a community..

So whose up for this ??

Sounds awesome. I just got a recroommasters 32" sit down arcade. Right now I am downloading it. Hoping to configure the arcade games to the extension controller and have everything that needs more buttons to 2 xbox 360 controllers. Will be ordering 2 Sinden light guns.

This feels daunting though

I'm down to watch the progress on this.  One thing: will you be foregoing the pinball sets or utilizing top buttons for them?  I would find that really odd to get used to, but I'm dreading drilling the holes in the sides of my A1U cab to install the extras as I have what I consider more than my normal share of bad luck when trying new projects (I can see royally mucking up the show with the cabinet sides looking like swiss cheese lol!).

Mate !! Thats a brilliant question….
So I should totally be considering cloning one of the buttons to each side (1 player only) ….. Great input , and for the sake of just adding 2 buttons I should be keeping Pinball (depending on what it looks like on my 4:3) and even if it uses the marquee that would be fun !!

So at this moment in time I would love to include pinball , and use button a and b for the flippers (and I will clone them buttons on the side of each side of cab!)

#feeling awesome

but imagine it when its done and finished – plus there is power in numbers… Im thinking

  • Publicly decide on the systems
  • Announce each system in the forums and someone "take control" of that system and its on them
  • publicly release (re-release ??)

I love the concept and the effort you're putting into this. I just built my first 2p bartop and I've realized there is less than 100 games of the 30k games on the image that I really care to play so a slimmed down build of the 8TB sounds fantastic.

I'd recommend maybe keeping a spreadsheet (or some other structured document) with all the stats about the games you care about (compatible controllers, number of players, horizontal/vertical, etc) then you could make a script to create a paired down setup from the full 8TB build. That way say if I wanted a vertical cab I could easily generate a setup with everything I need. Just a thought.

After years of dreaming of having a mame cabinet but not having the carpentry skills nor patience to build my own I finally hopped on the Arcade1Up boat and I'm loving every minute of it.  I literally stumbled across this pack the other day and had literally planned on doing something similar so it's great to know it's worth working on.  I'm planning on getting a 4 player control deck with the start buttons on the outsides and I'm thinking that the placement for the outermost players would probably be about the right distance for a Pinball setup with one of the other front start buttons mapped as the launch.  I know a trackball can work with this deck and 6 buttons for players 1 and 2 but i'm not sure if I can squeeze a spinner into the setup without it being too far out of the way to use properly.  If I could get my hands on a vertical Arcade1Up I'd almost certainly just make a vertical trackball spinner setup for it.  All of the local stores are sold out of all of the vertical cabinets and I'm not sure if I want to spend $150 to order an Asteroids just for that purpose.

I've hooked up an LCD marquee screen which sounds like it also might work well for the Pinball display too.  I'm also working with an Ultimarc setup with LEDBlinky as I really love the concept of having the buttons light up and change colors depending on the control scheme required for the loaded game.

Only thing I'm on the fence about is the light guns.  I absolutely love lightguns but haven't played any in many many years due to not having a CRT.  What is the preferred method for that nowadays?  Aimtrak?

I am really interested in how this is going, any updates.

I am sat with time on my hands due to CV-19 as is everyone and I am thinking about starting a project like this.   I have modded wii's and wii-u's in the past and messed about with Mame (and hyperspin) for PC  years ago and got bored once i did all the hard work.  Nothing like the piggies setup though.

This question about the light guns really interests me, i want to get the Golden Tee (trackball) and the light gun games like house of the dead and time crisis games working well, but this looks a bit more challenging.

What sort of system is required to get something like the piggies set up running smooth?
