Hi all,

I’m from the uk and loved gaming when I was growing up, I was the only person I knew who had a Coleco Vision console!  I went from there with Amstrad, Amiga, SNES, PS etc.

I’ve dabbled at emulation on PC’s and on Apple TV but I’m in the market to get a little project going on in he background as I wrestle with 3 kids and a full time job.  I never like to buy something ready made, I like to feel the accomplishment of a finished product that I’ve made (with help from people like yourselves).  I stumbled on your website through a YouTuber I watched recently as I was researching what I wanted, fantastic work btw! The images I’ve seen so far look incredible! I will be building something over time and just adding bits as I go along.  I want to start with a basic setup with a computer/pi and gamepads then add other controls and cabs as money and room becomes available.

So, couple of questions to get me started, should I go pi or pc? I am leaning towards pi as I think they can handle the gaming I want to play (up to MAME, N64 level, I have an Xbox for anything above that really) and the support seems excellent.  If I do go for the pi, should I go for the 4 or stick with the 3?

also, I’ve dug out a pi 1b that I used to play around with for my dad to use Kodi etc, I tried to load up the ‘minipie turbo 16gb’ image available but it came up with the ‘illegal installation’.  I knew it would be a long shot but I thought I would give it a go, are there any archived images that would run on this ancient pi?  Just so I can have a play around and break this one before I get the newer kit.

Best regards

Mike

Haha, I had a Colecovision first too, and an Amstrad CPC 464 a bit later on , although I went Master System, then Megadrive….

Dont expect Great N64 emulation with a pI 3B Or below, so go with a Pi 4b , (4gb) although its still in its infancy as to what it runs… so personally at this moment in time I would go with PC – infact, I would go with PC anyways and go CoinOps Arcadia 5 or something !!

OK , No good here, get rid of it or give it a purpose in life such as a OMV Server , nothing we have on site will work on that old tech….

Ah see I wanted to go down the Sega route but the pulling power of Super Mario World and Mariokart was too great! Haha

Thanks for the immediate advice, I done a little research and the CoinOPs looks a really decent shout!  Already got a few ideas for that but I guess I’ll head over to the CoinOPs section of the forum and see what I can dig out.

Thanks again, speak soon
