Hi,
Just introducing myself. Older gamer here, I started with pong and used to buy my Atari 2600 cartridges at the local movie theatre. ( yes they had kiosks in the early 80s in movie theatres selling Atari stuff lol) Big PC gamer since before the Commodore 64. Build my own systems, overclock etc. Although not as much lately, business keeps me too busy 🙁 Messed with Mame on PC a few decades ago.
Now I’m here due to my love of retro arcade games, and more importantly I have a young son who loves them as much as me. I’m about to start digging through the forum and website but would love it if someone could help point me the right way if anyone has time.
I just picked up an Atari Gaming Stick with trackball, the MicroCenter one. It’s got a PI 3b in it, which I know isn’t the latest, but hey, the price was right and it’ll get us started. Besides, I’m not looking for something to crush PS2 games or anything. Never messed with Raspberry Pi but I have the gist. Also grabbed a 128gb class 10 micro sd for the image.
Can someone suggest a good Pi3b image, and point me to the basics of how to image it on there? I’ve watched a few youtubes and know that Virtualman images seem well regarded, and most of the controls seem to be mapped. But I don’t want to disparage other people who’ve taken the time and effort to build great images as well. Our main interest is classic arcade roms, and older game systems. I know the Pi3 stuff is older, but hoping to find something good and get this setup by this weekend for my son.
Thanks for any help, and just tell me to post this request elsewhere if needed, apologies for the noob questions.

Welcome new guy , thanks for jumping in !
Ok so basically the general rule of thumb to get the image is something well seeded, something recent and from a well recognised name,

Hey Ninja. Thanks for taking time out to reply and help me out. I greatly appreciate it! Those images look great, exactly what I was looking for. Nice to see they are still popular and seeded well currently too. I’m working on reading up getting one put on the card. Digging through how to guides to give me basic info on flashing to the card etc. Forgot how enjoyable this was lol.
Appreciate 🙂

Sorry for the slow reply… work has had me jumping. Thank you for sharing the sage advice for a new guy. You’ve definitely turned it into an art and a science 🙂 I appreciate it very much. I am good to go!! Your instructions were so clear, and to the point vs some of the long youtube vids that were all over the place.
Burning a couple tonight as I found another SD Card in the house. ( For variety and to see the awesome images)
Amazing you burn 20+ a month… for friends , or do you collect etc? I used to burn some .iso on Cd-Rom for friends and to collect. Not Pi images obviously.
From here to the UK, our sincere thanks again.
