I’m having the same issue as well. Hoping someone out there can help out.
Edit: I might have run across a fix for this. It possibly has to do with booting up the first time and defaulting to 4k. I did change a ton of settings and updated a ton to no avail, however when I went into raspi-config and changed the resolution down to 1080p, that possibly made it all work, regardless it is working now. I am going to try again with a fresh install to make sure that was indeed the fix and will update this post again.

I found the fix. In raspi-config, you have to change the resolution to 1080p from 4k. I actually found this pretty difficult to do, but I read somewhere else that if you cant change the resolution, right before you select to change it, unplug the hdmi cable and then select resolution blindly, then plug it back in and all the sudden you will have the menu options to change to 1080p. Once its changed it will boot up and run perfectly.
So the steps are:
1. at the crash, hit enter and it will take you to command
2. type in sudo raspi-config
3. select display options
4. uplug your hdmi cable if you cant change resolution and while its unplugged select change resolution
5. select what you want the resolution to be (1080p runs great and is the last one)
6. reboot and enjoy.

I found the solution to my problem, so maybe it’ll help somebody else with a similar problem.
The error was because I was using a 4K TV to check the Raspberry Pi was working. Once I transfered to using a standard 1080HD monitor, the image runs perfectly for me.
I’ve read online that it possible to change the Pi settings to make it work in 4K, but as this is not something I need to do, I haven’t bothered trying.
I’ve not actually got round to checking it out fully yet as I am waiting to install it into a Picade system, but so far it looks great.
