does the sound work on arcade games in Retro pie?

I tried 2 images and the sound does not work on the arcade games in retropie.

Does the sound work for anyone?  (maybe there is no sound?)

If you can get sound how is the sound configured from you PI?  through the HDMI?   through the 3.5 media jack?  through the USB?

I get sound on the startup screens, and on some emulators, but not on Mame.

The video didn't help, my monitor does not have speakers.

How are people hooking up their pi to speakers?  HDMI?, USB?, headphone jack?

I get sound, just not on mame and other emulators, some work.

most images, unless specified output via hdmi too , so you would need to switch it to 3.5mm to output via speakers…

I switched it to 3.5, and I get sound on the intro and during emulation station and the menus, but I don't get sound in most emulators. I do get sound in the atari 2600 emulator.
