

Persistent button mappings?

Total noob question and I am a bit embarrassed to ask: how do you (a) map the buttons so it is consistent across all of the emulators and (b) how do you make it stick?
I’ve been trying for what seems like forever. Each time thinking I am making progress, but only finding out it didn’t work the way I expected and in some cases made things worse.
I have a Raspberry Pi 3 running the 64gb ATTRACT-MODE.HYPERSPIN.V4.rpi3-SergioHyperspin in a cabinet with this joystick/button setup :
