sorry if this has been asked before but i am new to all this and not sure where to look on here.  I installed the vxmanXII image which is excellent but my question is, if i wish to add some of my own roms how would i scrape the new data or would i amend the gamelist.  Assistance always appreciated.

Before adding roms I would check how much space is left on the SD Card and compare that to the size you want to transfer. Besides enough space for the Roms you need extra space left for the scraped data.

For the scraping part:

You can use the main menu, press the start button and it will be the first option. Go in to that menu and change it to your liking. You need to edit cause otherwise it will start scraping every game and that takes a loooooooooooong time on a Pi. So if you added only a few roms in let's say Arcade, choose only that system and choose missing images only.

The second and more finetuned option would be to press CTRL + F4 in your Emulation Station screen (the normal screen) and you will enter in the console. (commandprompt)

type: cd RetroPie-Setup (hit Enter)

type: sudo ./retropie_setup.sh (hit Enter)

a menu will popup, Press C on your keyboard or move with the keyboard arrows to Configuration / tools. When the blue bar jumped to that option, you are good to go and can press Enter.

You will be thrown to another menu, same thing but now you have to go to option 831 scraper – Scraper for EmulationStation if you got that highlighted, press Enter again.

You have now arrived in the actual menu of the scraper /

Again you see a list with options to choose from, as in the first option, when adding only a few Roms choose only to scrape for that system and also change option 8 Gamelist from Overwrite to Append. To change the option highlight the choice and press the spacebar once. Everything between (   ) you can toggle with the spacebar, other options bring you to a submenu etc.

Maybe as a last tip, before you do anything backup the gamelist.xml you will find in the roms folder of the desired system you want to work on. That file holds the already scraped info.

This file is also used to add a game manually if the scraping gets no results, to do that open it in for example notepad++ but do make backups first. Can be tricky those xml files ?

Hope this helps,
