Ok, this is driving me crazy, it’s happened twice with two different burns on two different SSD drives, so I don’t think it’s the hardware.

Wrote the image to the SSD, it boots fine, I configure my controller, all is well, navigate the menus, no problems. Make a few changes to the controller in Retroarch, go into raspi-config to enable SSH and ensure that USB boot is selected. When I exit, it prompts me to reboot, which I do, and then…nothing but a black screen. Power off, power on, I see that first screen with the QR code for a millisecond, and then back to the black screen. Tried using a different USB port, no luck.

When this happened last night, I tried again around an hour later and all of a sudden it worked, nothing working now with the second SSD. As mentioned, two completely different SSD drives, both times I can easily access everything during the first boot, it’s the reboot that I can’t recover from.

Any ideas of the cause, but more importantly, how to fix?
