i was trying to do the same thing, and had some issues as well, AFTER i completed the write to the HDD, i ended up using the motion blue base image, on the SD card, and loading up my hdd with the roms, writing to the hdd this way is MUCH faster btw.

and in the description below the video is a script file that makes cake of doing several tasks, like expanding the disk etc.
