i always assumed that 64gb was the largest sd card you could use on a raspberrypi 3+ but i see some front ends at 128gb and larger, can i use a 128gb sd card or larger for mounting images.  Assistance as always appreciated

Yes you can use larger. However some images push sd cards to their limit of storage and you can get sdcards that just aren't big enough.

Personally i pick up a few 2.5" hard drives on the cheap and put larger retropie images on them. The newer images all self boot as well making life easier (as before you had to mess around creating a boot sd card).

Crazy I have yet to run any image on the pi from a Hdd , Its on my 202o "to do" list 😀
