The Sega System 16 is an arcade board launched in 1985 by Sega. In its lifetime, approximately 40 games were released for the system, making it one of the most successful arcade boards produced by Sega. Two variants were produced, the Sega System 16A and the Sega System 16B. Some of the games produced for the console included: Shinobi, Golden Ax, Altered Beast and Dynamite Dux.
To prevent piracy, many consoles used an encryption system: a Hitachi FD1094 chip was used which contained the main CPU in addition to the decryption key.
The combination of the Motorola 68000 and the Zilog Z80 on the board would prove to be a very popular and durable hardware configuration well into the 1990s. The Capcom CPS-1 and CPS-2 boards were built on a similar basis, And also the Neo-Geo SNK console / arcade. In fact, Sega would then use the 68000 / Z80 combination for his Sega Mega Drive game console.
