Night trap – ‘back in the day” was an awesome game, an interactive movie game developed by digital pictures, released originally for the Sega CD (in 1992) – The game uses Full Motion Video (FMV) and the player takes the role of a special agent tasked to watch over teenage girls…….
The game received mixed reviews, every teenage boy seemed to love it, but elsewhere the game was cited in the 1993 United States Senate Committee hearing on violent video games (along with Mortal Kombat!) – the game was then pulled from the shelves of retailers IN DECEMEBER ’93, with Sega ceasing production immediately – as a side note the senate hearing led on to the creation of the ESRB (video game ratings board) which is in place to this very day. The short movie below shows the controversy surrounding the original release of the game.
In May 2014, the original designer (James Riley) announced he was in talks to re-release the game, in August 2014 a kickstarter campaign appeared – the games original creators formed a company called NIGHT TRAP LLC and unfortunately the kickstarter campaign failed to hit target. Eventually in April 2017 Night Trap 25th Anniversary Edition was announced, the game was released on PC and PS4 on August 15th 2017 – strangely enough the ESRB gave the game a “TEEN” rating which was a rating LOWER than the original “MATURE” – oh how times had changed (GTA anyone?).
At the congressional hearing back in ’93 the Nintendo of American President (former) announced “NIGHT TRAP WILL NEVER APPEAR ON A NINTENDO SYSTEM” , on August the 24th , 2018 Night Trap (anniversary edition) was released on the Nintendo Switch. Check out the Switch game play below.
When the re-release happened on PC back in 2017 – there was a special THEATRE MODE , which we believe was unlocked when the game was completed, in the video below we share with you NIGHT TRAP – THE MOVIE.
Thanks for reading, whilst we are certainly no PatmanQC and his awesome arcade documentaries we do hope you enjoyed the read (and watching!)
