There are gods living amongst us, from WDG, to Simply Austin, from Gabber23 to The PiPiggies and all the Mad Little Pixels, HyperPies, and KinGuyRons inbetween, one of the chosen gods known as IDO (I Died Once) likes to pop up from the underbelly from time to time and drop a hard solid image on us. The video below shows the ES version of this image, but this is also an AM image too!

This image is a dedication to everything Sega, no arcade, no Nintendo just a solid Sega image, with video snaps, loading screens and more, a fantastic “collectors card” theme (Card Crazy) from Hursty himself!

Nothing too terrible to report on here. I wanted to make an all Sega image for Retropie on the RPi3. I took the base Retropie 4.3 image, updated err’thing. Installed everything via the retropie install script except ffmpeg, that needed to be compiled manually with mmal in order for Attract Mode to work right. Installed attract mode via the retropie script. Creating this image was my most difficult thus far, it gave me about every error it could throughout the install, but we learned more than I ever cared to know about this project, although I had a blast working on it. 🙂 I’ve always been a Sega fan even though I never owned one growing up. This is my salute to Sega!

The intro video was worked and re-worked by my good friend and brother in law who shall remain nameless for several purposes. He does a great job at shit like this and he’s a good guy to boot. He made two videos, both are in the splashscreens section.

I decided to make the default theme for emulationstation Card Crazy. It has built in support for all included systems. I am a little disappointed that most of the popular themes do not support many of the systems. But that one did, and… it’s got the Super Nintendo box right there in the background. We never had a Sega growing up. We had an Atari and then the NES & SNES. This is my nod to the system I never had, and the nintendo box in the background sets this off for me. There are plenty of other themes installed so feel free to do what you will with this.

I included the hyperpie layouts for all systems under Attract Mode, with hyperpie branding removed. Note that this is not necesarily a Hyperpie image, so much as I copied and used the layouts and Cinematix theme. Hursty’s B2B-1000 for the Attract Mode Setup Menu.

The image was built on and with only the Raspberry Pi 3 in mind. Running this image on any other device may cause stomach discomfort and/or laxative effect. Kodi is not included or installed, but could be easily added. No “collections” have been added but easily could be.

All systems have full or mostly full romsets except the Dreamcast. You will need to use the Emulation Station controller setup config to complete configuration of your controllers. You will also need to use the Retrpie Setup Script and a keyboard to access the setup for reicast, the Dreamcast emulator, in order to set up controllers.

Included Systems:

Sega SG-1000
Sega SC-3000
Sega Mark III
Sega Game Gear
Sega Mastersystem
Sega Megadrive / Genesis
Sega Megadrive-Japan
Sega 32x
Sega CD
Sega Dreamcast

System also includes Game Gear and Genesis Hacks, which can be found only under Attract Mode.

All included Dreamcast games have been play tested and either work perfectly or well enough. I found things like intro videos to not be perfect, but all the games I added work well enough.

I added the following lines to /boot/config.txt making this an
overclocked image.

arm_freq=1300
gpu_freq=500
core_freq=500
sdram_freq=500
sdram_schmoo=0x02000020
over_voltage=2
sdram_over_voltage=2

Add me to the conversation if this image is discussed, if you have any questions, to tell me that I suck, or just reach out and tell me how awesome I am! [email protected], include the word “Sega” in the subject so it doesn’t get lost, mmm’k? – I_DIED_ONCE
