Open a decent CoinOPS Arise pack and scroll past the fighters and the shmups. Somewhere in there, usually filed under “Misc” or buried in a Neo Geo folder, sits a row of ROMs nobody talks about at parties. Cherry Master. Sittman and Pitt’s five-drum poker machine descendants. Some regional fruit-machine clone with a name like Golden Poker Double Up that barely runs at 60fps on the wrong core. Every serious Batocera build I’ve put together in the last two years has had at least one of these buried in it, and almost nobody boots them more than once.
That’s the part worth sitting with for a second.
These aren’t stray additions. They’re some of the oldest cabinet software still circulating, dating back to the coin-op boom of the late 1970s and early 1980s, when operators were experimenting with all kinds of cabinet formats beyond the familiar shooters, racers and maze games. MAME preserved them for the same reason it preserved everything else: because the hardware was dying and someone had to dump the ROMs before the boards rotted. MAME turned 25 in 2022, and in that time it’s quietly become one of the largest archives of obscure coin-operated cabinet software on the planet, sitting right next to Pac-Man in the same driver list.
Here’s the thing that gets glossed over in most retro-gaming writeups. Some of these cabinets sat in a strange category between arcade entertainment and machine-based reward systems. The line between one type of cabinet and another wasn’t always clear, and manufacturers often reused familiar screens, controls and mechanical ideas across very different products.
That history still matters because the software survives. When someone spends a Saturday night running Cherry Bonus III on a MiSTer, they’re not just playing a curiosity. They’re running software that taught a generation of players how to read hold mechanics, paytables, bonus features and rapid visual feedback long before those ideas became commonplace elsewhere in gaming.
Why CoinOPS Builders Keep Including These ROMs
Ask around the CoinOPS Discord and you’ll get two answers. Some builders include these cabinets purely for historical completeness, the same reason a MAME set includes obscure Japanese mahjong titles or regional quiz machines that most people outside their original market have never seen. Preservation for its own sake.
Others include them because they’re genuinely interesting in short bursts. Video Poker Draw from the mid-1980s, for example, has a remarkably clean interface and a simple hold-and-draw structure that still feels immediately understandable on a handheld in 2026.
Both reasons are legitimate. The value is in seeing how cabinet design evolved, how operators experimented with different formats and how familiar interface ideas spread from one genre to another.
The Legal Grey Zone Retro Preservation Lives In
This is where things get genuinely complicated, and it’s worth being straight about it rather than hand-waving past it.
Running old ROMs for personal, non-commercial preservation sits in the same broad legal discussion as console and arcade emulation generally. Ownership of the original hardware or software, copyright status, local law and the way the files were obtained can all matter.
The preservation community has fought hard for the right to keep obsolete software alive at all. Every three years, the US Copyright Office reviews DMCA Section 1201 exemptions that determine when archivists, libraries and museums can legally circumvent access controls to preserve ageing games and hardware.
That matters because many obscure arcade boards are now surviving only because somebody dumped the software before the hardware failed permanently. Without preservation work, entire branches of arcade history would simply disappear.
What These Cabinets Tell Us About Arcade Design
The most interesting part of these ROMs is how much design DNA they share with other arcade software from the same period.
They relied heavily on instantly readable screens, short interaction loops and strong audiovisual feedback. The player needed to understand what had happened without reading a manual, often within seconds of sitting down at the machine.
That same philosophy can be found everywhere in classic arcades. Pac-Man communicates danger through ghosts and colour. Space Invaders makes the threat physically descend towards the player. Puzzle games use clearing animations and score sounds to tell you immediately whether a move worked.
Obscure card and fruit-machine-style cabinets were simply another branch of that same design environment.
Why They Matter in a Modern Retro Build
Most people building a modern Batocera, RetroBat or CoinOPS system aren’t going to spend hours with these titles, and that’s fine.
Their value is partly contextual. A complete front end becomes more interesting when it shows the odd corners of arcade history rather than only the famous machines everybody already knows.
You start seeing how manufacturers reused hardware, how button layouts changed between regions and how similar interface ideas appeared in completely different cabinet categories.
For anyone interested in preservation, that’s arguably more interesting than whether the game itself would make a modern top-ten list.
Where This Leaves Retro Builders
Keep the ROMs in your pack if historical completeness matters to you. There’s genuine preservation value in having a working Video Poker Draw cabinet beside Space Invaders, OutRun and Street Fighter II.
The wider game-preservation debate shows how difficult keeping obsolete software accessible can be, particularly when publishers, archivists and copyright law all approach the subject from different directions.
That’s why these strange little cabinet ROMs matter.
They aren’t necessarily the games you’ll show somebody first when demonstrating a new 4TB build. They aren’t the reason most people install CoinOPS. But they capture a part of arcade history that would otherwise be extremely easy to forget.
The cabinets disappeared from bars, arcades and amusement halls decades ago. The ROMs didn’t.
And for preservation, sometimes that’s enough.
