Arcade Punks is thrilled to bring you the latest creation from the talented Light Gun Lunatics team—the Batocera v40 Light Gun Build! This bootable image is a massive leap forward in light gun gaming, offering incredible compatibility and gameplay tweaks for enthusiasts of every level.

A Collaborative Masterpiece

This release is the result of extensive collaboration between key contributors, including Peter Drady, Scott, Michael, Damian, Mikael, Tyler, and more. The build is supported by input from the light gun gaming community, with testing by passionate individuals to ensure the best possible experience. A special thanks goes out to Lightgunman on Archive.org, the Batocera community (including the French Facebook groups like Mini Cake TV), and Johnny from TKS Sitch Gaming, who created a dedicated Discord channel to support this project.

What’s Inside the Build?

The Batocera v40 Light Gun Build features over 530 games, spanning Windows, Flash, TeknoParrot, and more. This 270GB (zipped) build is a powerhouse for light gun enthusiasts. Whether you’re using a portable device like a Steam Deck or a full-sized arcade cabinet, this build has you covered. For optimal performance, we recommend a 512GB micro SD card for portable setups or a similarly sized SSD/HDD for cabinet builds.

Key Updates in v40

  • Flash and Windows Sections: Major tweaks have expanded compatibility for games like Aliens and Terminator (via TeknoParrot), running smoothly on Batocera.
  • Windows Game Integration: Painstaking efforts have been made to convert TeknoParrot games to run on Batocera. While still in the experimental phase, this marks a groundbreaking move for the community, with single-player functionality currently supported.
  • Future Compatibility: While Blamcon and RetroShooter Reapers light guns aren’t fully supported yet, a temporary patch is available for Reapers. Batocera’s upcoming updates are expected to bring full support soon.

What You Need to Know Before Diving In

  1. Hardware Requirements: This build works well on devices like the Steam Deck and reasonable PCs. However, keep in mind that performance will vary for more demanding systems like PS3 or TeknoParrot games.
  2. Plug-and-Play Reality: While Batocera simplifies setup, not all systems are guaranteed to work seamlessly. Be sure to consult the Batocera Wiki for guidance on light gun configurations and mapping.
  3. Windows Games: These are primarily TeknoParrot conversions. The integration to run these games is a major step forward, but functionality is limited to one player for now.
  4. Modify at Your Own Risk: You can adapt this build for personal use, but you may lose access to unique features like custom scripts, UI tweaks, and graphics.

A Look Ahead

While v40 is a stable game-changer, the community eagerly awaits updates, which aim to fully integrate Blamcon and RetroShooter Reapers. This build serves as a solid foundation, packed with enhancements that set the stage for even greater things to come.
