The OtherOS functionality of the original PS3 meant you could install a flavor of Linux and turn your games console into a PC. On April 1, 2010 Sony released a new firmware update (3.2.1) that removed the feature. At the time, SCEA Senior Director of Corporate Communication & Social media Patrick Seybold explained the decision had been taken to ensure a more secure system, basically they were worried that the linux operating system was a backdoor into their ‘secure’ system.
A month later Anthony Venturea filed a ‘class action lawsuit’ seeking near on $5 million in compensation, which was dismissed in 2011 and then brought back on appeal in 2014, 2 years on (now) and Sony dinally decided to settle and it *COULD* cost them a small fortune if all you original PS3 owners have kept good records…..
If you live in the US and purchased a Fat PS3 between November 1, 2006 and April 1, 2010 then you can claim $55 compensation from Sony. However, in order to qualify you must produce proof of purchase and proof of use of the OtherOS feature. Alternatively, you can provide proof of purchase and attest that you intended to use the OtherOS feature and receive $9 compensation.
GO ON PROVE IT…
Proving you owned the PS3 back then is simple, just find your receipt (digital or printed) or your credit card statement or even bank statement, as long as that purchase is listed thats the proof…
Now proving you used the Linux is another story, this requires a screenshot of Linux running on YOUR PS3, proof of purchase of Linux or some documentation that clearly shows it was being used (oh how we wish PSN had emailed us on install!!)
You have until December 7th to submit your claim and proof on the offical CLAIMS WEBSITE – The actual settlement wont be approved until January 24th 2017 and even then the judge may decide it wont be going ahead, however if it does and your claim is approved then payments will be sent out around 40 days later, so you’ll have your compensation to cover the tears in March.
We estimate that lots of claims will get the ‘knock back’ based on evidence and we also foresee a fair bit of Photoshopping going on out there, but there were MILLIONS of people who installed it and THOUSANDS of blogs out there with guides and stuff, what better proof could you have then a blog youve wrote, dated with images….
MAKE YOUR CLAIM NOW
REMEMBER YOU ONLY HAVE UNTIL 7TH DECEMBER
