Super Mario 3 is one of the most ICONIC games ever released, it remains a classic in its own right, the graphics were insane (for its day) and really did bring the NES to the next level. To this day the gameplay itself is fun and addictive. Even today over 25 years later you can fire up SM3 and kill a few hours if need be!
Back in 1990, a number of programmers, including gaming and coding legend John Carmack created a PC port of Super Mario Bros. 3 with the hopes of getting Nintendo to sign off on full-fledged development. As the story goes, Nintendo declined, resulting in everyone involved with the project to start their own gaming company called id Software, which went on to quickly define PC gaming in the 90s, with titles like Wolfenstein 3-D and Doom delighting me and millions of other teenagers with revolutionary action play and gratuitous violence.
Recently John Romero (iD Software founder) uploaded the PC port of Super Mario Bros. 3 to Vimeo. This could of been a game changer – imagine if they went ahead and released it, if Nintendo gave the nod… Would we ever have had Doom?
