1TB MiSTer Fully Loaded Image “MiSTer Beast” from Slappy McPhee

Going back a month ago, Slappy McPhee dropped us a 1terrabyte fully loaded MiSTer FGPA image and we were like “WTF IS A MiSTer?” – well we already kinda knew, but had no real hands on experience with this hobbyist kit. Some of you may recognise the name “Slappy McPhee” especially if you been part of the Odroid Scene (Team ORA) – some of you may just want to thank him for this great build!

This has been tried and tested on THIS 1TB MICRO SD CARD, and wrote and played properly first time! Check out the video above for a complete lists of computers, consoles, arcade and more!

DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL

1- Download the rar files from your source of choice (see below, torrent, rapidgator, usenet)

2- Extract the RAR files using WINRAR (more info)

3- Write image to SD Card (heres how!)

4- Put into your MiSTer and switch on and play!

OUR FIRST EXPERIENCE WITH THE MISTER

Ok, so if your expecting a CoinOps style flashy front end, or a basic Launchbox selection screen, then you are going to be HUGELY disappointed, this isnt about the bells and whistles, this is  a MiSTer, its not a regular computer like a laptop or desktop PC. It’s also not a single board computer like a Raspberry Pi. Instead, it’s a specialised device designed specifically for playing old video games from systems like the NES, SNES, and Sega Genesis. It uses a special kind of technology called an FPGA to recreate the way those old game systems worked exactly.

An FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array) is like a super flexible computer chip. It can be programmed to act like many different kinds of chips all in one. So, in the case of MiSTer, it’s programmed to act like the chips inside old video game consoles and computers, allowing it to play games from those systems accurately. Think of it as a chip that can transform itself into different chips to play different games.

So, in simple terms, MiSTer is a device for playing old video games, but it’s not a typical computer or gaming console. Thus you will experience the game play the closest to the original game play you can get – BUT – in our eyes you really have to be a purist to spot the difference, or feel the difference, of course the MiSTer can hook up to original hardware much simpler than a Pi or PC, but this is for the “elite” retro gamers, the hobbyists and purists, not so much for us Punks who love the front ends, the gameplay videos and the awesome selection screens before indulging in one of thousands of games – but each to their own, we stuck our head in the MiSTer communities, including the official Discord Server, and the official MiSTer Forum,  and these guys are actually welcoming and friendly, helpful and passionate – kinda the opposite for some of the communities involved in the awesome front ends we share (not mentioning no names here!).

Ninja-UK who had the pleasure of using the MiSTer first hand, said he enjoyed it, but its very costly, and whilst he is NOT a purist, he could see some of the differences almost instantly, then he started playing “Flappy Bird” and this few hundred bucks box became a toy once more.
