VideoGameEsoterica has once again achieved a remarkable feat! In under a year following their successful preservation of Castlevania: The Arcade Game and just a month after salvaging Konami’s Gashaaaan!, the YouTuber has returned with a new series of videos, concentrating on their endeavours to safeguard yet another scarce artefact from arcade history.
Akuma Mortis Immortal, a relatively obscure title from developer Gamewax — a London-based studio renowned for its work on arcade racing games such as Wacky Races and Chase H.Q. 2 — is a horror-themed light gun shooter akin to Sega’s House of the Dead and Konami’s Evil Night. Nevertheless, it remains uncertain whether the game received a full commercial release akin to those titles, or if it was solely distributed in select beta locations for testing purposes.
Prior to VideoGameEsoterica’s intervention, the game had been included in the roster of playable titles for the Teknoparrot software package, enabling players to run PC-based arcade games on contemporary hardware. However, no direct download link to the game was provided, necessitating players to procure their own copies through other means.
Consequently, VideoGameEsoterica uploaded a fresh video to their channel on the morning of Sunday, 4th February, announcing that, with the assistance of Andy Geezer and their Discord community, they had successfully acquired a copy of the game board and had publicly archived the game (on Archive.org), with the aim of providing an alternative avenue for experiencing the title in the future.
Similar to the initial release of Castlevania: The Arcade, the game’s debut iteration lacked support for mouse controls. Fortunately, this limitation was swiftly rectified, with VideoGameEsoterica subsequently posting a second video on the same day, revealing that Andy Geezer and other members of their Discord community had provided them with the necessary files to enable mouse-based gameplay.
