ROMFLIX by Marco, originated on the Android (check it out here) created by Marco, an awesome chap with a passion for ease of use and sexy looking interfaces – Now Romflix is available for your Raspberry Pi too! – Whats more the base image is less than 2gb! Here we take a look at how that pans out – we test out downloading (shouts to TeamZT and RMUS for the hosting) and test out play-ability and configurations.
So on first boot, you’ll see the software expands the storage space on the SD Card, meaning it maxes the free space on the SD card out ready to auto download some ROMS and such. Then after waiting for that to complete (depending on size of micro SD card) – You’ll need a keyboard/mouse plugged in now for this first bit, which pops up (openelec) asking about your network and stuff, flick through all that and then the Sexy interface Loads up. Once it does, keep your finger on a key on your controller and the “NEW CONTROLLER DETECTED BOX” Should appear, here you can configure your controller to work with RomFlix.
Head on over to the SETTINGS MENU and then press down to the TOOLS menu and go into RomFlix Downloader, and simply choose what system you want to download and if its with covers, or just ROMS, in the video above we have chosen Sega MasterSystem, but as you can see there are LOADS to choose from – and the download speeds are decent considering its all 100% Free!
Once you have downloaded the roms you want go to the system on the main screen, push DOWN and then select “add rom” then select scan new roms, and they will then be added 🙂
We are a GREAT fan of these auto ROM download images, and a huge fan of Marcos work, we also have MAD respect for TeamZT and anyone else involved in these images and ROM holding and storage, in the past we have assisted ourselves (and of course the assistance is always offered) – there is just ONE thing we are not too keen on, lots of the developers (not Marco as far as we know) of these download scripts often change settings which require going into private FaceBook groups and having to be technically minded to update them – they use the excuse “because of people who sell these system” when infact in our opinion, sellers often just preload with ROMS anyway and wouldnt sell with a rom download script (although there are some examples on various selling sites) – WE believe that these items are given by fellow geeks to not-so-geeky members of their families and then they have the headache of having to ‘update’ it all when it goes wrong, understandably if it were a seller they would be getting all kinds of abuse (quite rightly) – however – in lots of cases, its more of a headache, we believe here, that the ROMFLIX updater script overcomes that solution – time will tell, from what we see Marco (and TeamZT) are pretty good guys.
VERDICT: This was brilliant on our Android Test, and is equally, if not more, impressive on the Raspberry Pi, we cannot WAIT to check out the PC Edition!
