Punks, this is a big one for the touchscreen crowd. MegaPPBox has landed, and it runs untouched Merit Megatouch XL and MAXX images on Windows, Linux, macOS and even Android. No keyless patches, no hacked executables, no bodged images. You point it at your images, import your key dumps, double-click the version you want and you are stood in front of the countertop cabinet you remember from the pub.

What is MegaPPBox?

MegaPPBox is a fork of the 86Box PC emulator, thinned right down and built around one job: being a Megatouch. Developer Xeon3D has added the extra bits that make a Megatouch machine a Megatouch, including the I/O board, the security keys and the modem.

The clever part is how it handles the games’ hardware checks. Megatouch software looks for a Dallas security key on the Merit I/O board (a DS1205 MultiKey or a DS1991 iButton), the model string of the hard disk, a CPUID-capable CPU and, on the Linux-based releases, the motherboard’s PCI devices. Instead of patching the games to skip those checks, MegaPPBox answers them in emulated hardware. Your images run with zero bytes changed.

What it can do

  • Runs every version from XL to MAXX Crown.
  • Unpatched images preferred. There are a lot of images going around that are not proper, and this is built to run the real thing.
  • Coin, Operator Setup and Calibrate are all on the toolbar. The mouse is your finger: click the screen to touch it.
  • I/O board emulated (partially, still a work in progress), and the Dallas keys are loaded automatically for each game.
  • Emulated modem, with sound, for the DOS versions, and an RTL8139 network card for the Linux versions. Why a modem? The answer is in the endings.
  • Mega-Link: link up to 8 cabinets for head-to-head games, on your own PC, across your LAN or over the internet. Version 1.08 adds the original RS-485 Mega-Link that the XL releases and MAXX 1st used.
  • Machine Manager: point it at a folder and it looks inside every image, lists the Megatouch releases it finds with their versions, and picks the right hardware profile and key for each.

Download MegaPPBox

The current release is version 1.08. Grab the file for your system from the latest release on GitHub:

You have Download
Windows (64-bit) MegaPPBox-windows-x64.zip
Mac (Apple M1 or newer) MegaPPBox-macos-arm64.zip
Linux (x86_64) MegaPPBox-linux-x86_64.zip
Android (64-bit ARM, Android 9 or later) MegaPPBox-android-arm64.apk

Download the key dumps here. MegaPPBox does not ship with any keys, so you need to import these (or dumps from your own cabinet) before your images will run.

Android needs a beefy device

Yes, you can run a Megatouch on your phone. It has touch, sound, Mega-Link over Wi-Fi and the modem. It does need serious horsepower though:

  • Galaxy S25 Ultra: runs at 100% most of the time.
  • Galaxy Tab S10 Lite: runs at around 50 to 75% most of the time.

What you need

  • Megatouch images. HDD images for MAXX and the later XL releases, and CD images in ISO format for the early, non-HDD XL releases.
  • Key dumps. Small 264 or 192 byte files read from the cabinet’s security key.
  • Make copies of your images first. The games write their settings and scores to the image, so keep your originals safe and play from copies.

Getting it running

  1. Download and unzip MegaPPBox somewhere like your Documents folder. Keep everything in the folder together, as it needs its roms folder. That folder is your cabinet and it remembers your games and settings.
  2. Run MegaPPBox.exe (Windows), MegaPPBox.app (Mac) or bin/MegaPPBox (Linux). On Windows, if you see “Windows protected your PC”, click More info then Run anyway.
  3. The Machine Manager opens. Click Browse… and choose the folder with your images in it. No folder yet? Make one and use Import images….
  4. Click Import key… and choose your key dumps (you can pick several at once). MegaPPBox works out which release each key is for. You only do this once.
  5. Pick a game, click Run (or double-click it) and play. Next time it boots straight into the same game.

The first time you run one of the later MAXX games (Ruby to Crown), it restarts once by itself and then asks you to calibrate the touch screen. Just click each target as it appears.

Upgrading from 1.06 or earlier? Those versions had keys built in, and the current one has none. Import your key dumps before you run your images.

Can you help? Images wanted

Xeon3D is currently looking for MAXX Original, MAXX 2K and MAXX Sapphire 2 ISO images. The MAXX and MAXX 2K images floating around online are upgrade versions, and there are no Sapphire 2 ISOs online at all. If you have the real discs, head over to the MegaPPBox GitHub page and get in touch.

Credit where it is due

All credit for the emulator core goes to the 86Box project and its authors. MegaPPBox is Megatouch-specific hardware and a lot of careful trimming on top of their work, with the XL generation’s I/O map and key wiring cross-checked against MAME’s mtouchxl driver. It is released under the GNU GPL version 2 or later, the same as 86Box. Huge thanks to Xeon3D for putting this together.
