Virtualman is no stranger to image creations, and adding his own flair and passion to each of his many builds is back with a selection of great images, a 32gb base image, a 64gb base image and a 128gb base image, but with Arcade pre-loaded, all ready for SD Card or SSD install, and all ready to have ROMs added to them from his very own packs or indeed the soon to be released Universal ROM Sets (based on Virtualmans own ROM sets as well as the popular Motion Blue Rom sets).
The 32gb and 64gb versions contain NO ROMS, the arcade (128gb) version comes preloaded with arcade games, as seen in the video above.
Forward thinking hybrid approach best of both worlds Pi and PC. I will no longer provide fully loaded images as I have decided to separate all future content in modular bundles. From the same Loaded 512GB Pi4 Retro-Bliss-Revolution image you all love, but shrunk down to 128GB (2.8GB free) and targeted for Arcade cab and Arcade1up modes/enthusiast in mind! This is a semi-light version to get you all started as DIY build and make it your own to expand on as you see fit. – Virtualman
Virtualman has released various ROM sets, which are bundled in the up and coming Universal ROM Set release, huge props for his massive contribution to the project – that and the likes of the original Motion Blue ROM Set creators!
You now have 3 basic options to enjoy VMAN Retropie image.
1. Flash to SD card and enjoy a clean effortless approach. (Best supported option, but you will be limited on storage capacity).
2. Flash to HDD and boot without need of SD card. (Now stable and fully supported by Raspberry Pi OS, not as clean initially boot but give it time to expand after 3-4 reboots).
3. Hybrid combo approach – Flash to SD and use USB Mode Expand script to dump your roms on external USB 3.0 drive -> vman-extend-roms-external-drive
NOTE: For option 3 (pi-ext usb mode) only! ES will be much slower to load, however if the gamelists are clean you can enable from ES -> Other Settings -> ‘Parse Gamelist only’ in and ES boot up time is FASTER! However the con to this, clean meaning extra entries even doe game is not present on storage it will count it and will results from 16892 games to 17318 (so you will have extra empty entries). There is a reason why this feature in ES is off by default. Do this at your discretion.
As usual Virtualman has included his update script which also fixes any errors that have slipped past, although as these images are based on the uptogether 512gb image with fixes and updates applied it would be surprising if any more sprung up!
In the above video DrewTalks checks out his friends image, and goes into great detail with the scripts, bezels and more!
NOTE: At the time of publication the 32gb version has been removed from Virtualmans vault, it may have been recalled for booting reasons, we advise to opt for the 64gb or 128gb version and have left the 32gb version in the links for archival purposes only!
